In a ceremonial setting, a contract was signed for the development of a state-of-the-art combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant at the Tiszaújváros site of MVM Tisza Eromu Kft. The official agreement marks the beginning of the turnkey design, procurement, and construction of what is set to become Hungary’s most efficient large-scale power plant.

On the commissioning side, representatives of MVM Tisza Eromu, part of the MVM Group, signed the contract. The two-member consortium that won the public procurement for the construction and long-term maintenance of the gas turbines includes Calik Enerji Swiss a part of Çalık Enerji which is Türkiye’s one of leading energy companies and Italy’s major energy company, Ansaldo Energia—both of whose leaders authenticated the document.

The signing ceremony was attended by official representatives of the Embassy of Turkey and the Italian Republic and Hungarian government officials. In his ceremonial speech, Csaba Lantos, Minister of Energy, emphasized that the Hungarian state supports historically significant developments in the domestic energy sector and is committed to green and sustainable solutions.

“The construction of the new power plant is a significant step for domestic energy production, as it will simultaneously contribute to strengthening our energy independence, enhancing security of supply, and achieving our climate goals. The new facility will play a key role in balancing renewable electricity generation, thus supporting the successful energy transition. After entering commercial operation, the power plant is expected to provide an average of 7,500 GWh of electricity annually to the Hungarian power system,” said the Minister.
Ahmet Calik, Chairman of Calik Enerji Swiss, the leading member of the consortium, shared his thoughts on the vision of developing business relations and strengthening sustainable partnerships both in Hungary and throughout Europe.
“Since its establishment, Çalık Enerji has become one of the world’s leading energy companies, bringing the energy of nature to the service of people through successful projects conducted across the globe in order to create a better and sustainable future. We are honoured to take part in Hungary’s energy supply and security; and MVM Group’s ongoing strategic developments deploying our solutions created by our experienced team of experts using the most cutting-edge technologies. Establishing and striving for long-term solutions that support the community through our international and local partners, we would like to continue to be an integral part of the key growth of Hungary.”

Fabrizio Fabbri, CEO of Ansaldo Energia, one of the consortium members, spoke about the innovative role of the new Tisza CCGT power plant and highlighted that the most advanced gas turbines will be installed in the units.
“The main equipment for the two CCGT units, each with a gross capacity of 499 MWe and suitable for hydrogen use, will be manufactured by Ansaldo Energia. We will install the most advanced gas turbines, which will make this one of the most efficient power generation units in the country,” said Fabrizio Fabbri.
Károly Mátrai, CEO of the MVM Group, emphasized the local and regional importance of the investment and its societal and economic impacts:
“For the MVM Group, it is of utmost importance to provide sustainable and reliable solutions for the energy supply of the future. The Tisza CCGT project will replace a previously decommissioned conventional power plant with a modern, flexible production capacity, playing a key role in meeting the growing demands in the eastern part of the country—particularly by ensuring system stability and integrating planned weather-dependent renewables. The existing power plant infrastructure at our Tiszaújváros site—especially the grid connection, the cooling water system, and proximity to a natural gas connection—offers significant advantages. This development is also of great importance for local employment and the economy. Preliminary assessments show that the overwhelming majority of local residents support the investment, which confirms the project's social acceptance and contributes to the region's sustainable development.”
